There was a story in today’s Wall Street Journal about preserved and unopened baseball card boxes from the 1950s, 1960′s, and 1970′s. The story basically hinged on the fact that certain collectors or maybe more appropriately, investors, purchased boxes of baseball cards some.years ago, which still stand unopened today. What once cost a few dollars may now be worth hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars.
I don’t know about you, but I’d have a real hard time not opening one of these card boxes if I had one in my possession.
And I really don’t know if I’d be shelling out thousands of dollars on the chance that a very valuable card could be included in a box. That is basically just gambling. But….some people are willing to shell out the bucks for such a gamble.
There are even dealers looking to buy unopened baseball card material.

I have been collecting unopened packs since about 1989. I would say I have approximately 1,000 unopened packs from a variety of years/sports. Nothing from the 50s/60s, though. Sometimes it is hard to not open them and I have caved on a few occassions. I find it enjoyable.
I bet it’s real hard to not open those packs, especially when you know a gem could be sitting in one of them. But….if you hang on to the unopened packs, they could wind up being worth even more. Thanks for commenting.
I just opened an entire box – 36 packs – of 1990 Upper Deck baseball cards. It was great, but I’ve got to admit I felt kind of bad afterward. I guess my problem is I don’t know exactly how many untouched boxes there are out there. Is it well into the thousands? If so, I’ll feel better.
