Topps Baseball Cards

Baseball Card News 06 04 10

An article in the Denver Post, recently stated how baseball cards area a “huge hit again”. It’s an interesting quick read, that talks about the hype of the card market of late, evidencing the Strasburg baseball card sale that topped $16k, among others.

Ken Griffey Jr. announced his retirement as a major league baseball player after 22 MLB seasons and 630 home runs. He is a certain first ballot Hall of Famer.

2010 Topps Baseball Series 2 was released late in May. The best prices I’ve seen on the internet are currently at Blowout Cards and of course on eBay.

No new releases scheduled until the big drop on June 25th of the now perennial hit, Topps Allen and Ginter.   (If you think I might be overlooking a scheduled baseball card release between now and then, please let me know).

Baseball Card News This Week – April 16, 2010

A recent review of the newly released book Mint Condition: How Baseball Cards Became an American Obsession, describes how the “market” for 1980s baseball cards crashed, and how collecting baseball cards for their monetary value can be a dangerous pitfall.  If you were investing in cards in the 1980s you may have lost a bundle.  If you were collecting the cards for your own enjoyment, you still have cards that hold value, perhaps sentimentally, if not monetarily.

With Upper Deck owing previous debts, and now having to pay what is deemed as a “substantial amount” for their recent lawsuit settlement with MLB, it’s not a surprise that, according to The New York Times, they are having financial difficulties and trouble paying the MLB players’ union.

The 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle #311 continues to be a top seller online, as one recently graded PSA6 sold for a cool $18,000 on eBay.   Here are three other recent top baseball card sales online:

  1. 1971 Topps Thurman Munson #5, Graded PSA 9 – sold for $12,995
  2. 1982 Topps Cal Ripken Jr. Rookie, Graded BGS 10 – sold for $12,999
  3. 1956 Topps Mickey Mantle #135, Graded PSA 9 – sold for $12,500

The 2010 Topps Finest baseball card release became available in late March.  Much interest was generated for this release when Topps announced that the #1 Rookie Redemption card would be for Jason Heyward

Did you know……….at the Minnesota Twins new Target Field they have a wall of baseball cards lining the outside of the stadium?

2008 Allen and Ginter Pack 15

I haven’t posted from my box break of 2008 Allen & Ginter in a while, so let’s continue with Pack 15.  Man, I should really be reviewing some 2009 Allen & Ginter now, but hey, let’s finish this one off before we go there, right?  This pack contained one of my favorite NY Mets, who is having quite a season at the plate and on the basepaths.  Now, if we can just get his all-star caliber teammates healthy again.

Yunel Escobar, Braves, Card #192

Matt Kemp, Dodgers, Card #266

David Eckstein, Blue Jays, Card #93

Brian McCann, Braves, Card #51
