The Next Yankee to Reach 3,000 Hits?

There was a lot of hype around two New York Yankees recently. Both Yankees were in the news for different achievements just prior to the midsummer classic. Each one has been a career Bronx Bomber. One is a guaranteed future Hall of Famer. The other is well on his way to that status. I’m sure you’ve guessed by now that I’m talking about Derek jeter and Robinson Cano.

Derek put hit number 3,000 over the left field fence in Yankee Stadium wrapping up ajeter rookie month of hype prior to that event. And Robinson Cano garnered his recent hype for a much different feat. Cano was the somewhat unlikely hero of the 2011 HR Derby. Cano’s highest single season homer total was 29, reached just last year. He was up against competition with much more accomplished single season performances…..and he beat them all.

But Cano is more of a contact, than a power, hitter. And in that respect, he’s much like his recently acclaimed teammate. Will Cano someday reach the milestone that Jeter recently passed? It’s certainly not out of the question.

Through Derek’s first six full MLB seasons, he connected for a hit 1,187 times. His single season high, during that span, was 219 in 1999.

Mr. Cano, through his first six full MLB seasons, swatted the ball 1,075 times. A difference of just 112 hits in total between these two Yankees during comparable time spans. (Cano’s single season high has been 204 hits in 2009.)

Cano is on-track to get near 200 hits again this year. If he can stay healthy, we may, just may, be looking at the next New York Yankee to reach the 3,000 hit plateau.

2011 Allen and Ginter Non-Baseball Autographs

It’s funny, I’ve been checking out the eBay auctions lately for both relic and auto cards from the recently released 2011 Allen and Ginter.  Seems like people bought cases upon cases of this stuff and loaded up the hits on eBay.

The non-baseball athletes and celebrities seem to have the most bids on them.  Check out this Peter Gammons red ink auto numbered to 10. As of this post, it’s got 7 bids and is at $76. Or how about this Stan Lee auto? It’s got 3 days left on it, as of this posting, and it’s got 11 bids at $56.

And there are many more examples of non-baseball, and even non-sports, stars with multiple bids and going for double-digits. There is a George W. Bush auto in this year’s release which, not surprisingly, seems to be doing the best.

But there are also examples of baseball athlete autos that are in high demand as well. Check out this Aroldis Chapman auto. Seems to be in high demand, right?

The red ink autos limited to 10 seem to the ones that will garner attention and bids, no matter the subject of the card. Scarcity equals demand. And this is certainly the case with 2011 Allen and Ginter.

Mariano Rivera Cards To Collect Now

1)  Mariano Rivera’s 1992 Bowman Rookie Card

This card, graded PSA 9, has sold on eBay recently for $65 and up.  In a gem condition the card will go for well over $100.  This is Rivera’s most iconic card, depicting him before he became MLB’s greatest closer.

2)  2011 Topps Tribute Game-Used Auto Serial Numbered Card

Why this card?  Because it has all the attributes of a cool, and valuable, card:  game-used relic material, an autograph, and a limited edition serial numbered card.  There are only 99 of these cards which have been made.  Want to be one of the people who owns this card?  It won’t come cheap.  The cards are selling for more than $65.  But, given what you’re getting, $65 seems like a good price, to me anyway.  The only downside of this card is that the auto is a sticker.  But if you’re getting a card with a piece of game-used pinstripe, the fact that the auto is not on-card isn’t as important.

3)  2010 Topps Tribute Relics

This card, also serial numbered to 99, and including a piece of pinstripe, is listed in BGS 8.5 condition for $75. It does not have an auto, but it does show the iconic jersey number 42, emblematic of Jackie Robinson, which Mariano Rivera will be the last MLB player ever to wear.

Have any other Rivera cards which you think should be on this list?

Now Famous Fan to be Featured on Topps Card

The fan who returned Jeter’s 3,000th hit homerun ball to him, instead of selling it, will be featured on a Topps baseball card, according to Yahoo! Sports and the Associated Press.

It has only been indicated that Christian Lopez will be getting his own card in a set to be released later this year. The particular set wasn’t named, but we can guess that the card will be included, at a minimum, in the 2011 Topps Updates and Highlights release.

2011 Allen and Ginter – Live and Hot

2011 Allen and Ginter is now live. Single cards are up for sale on eBay and they seeing mucho action right now.

By the way, just a tip for those searching on eBay, I find that you’ll see many more listings is you search for “2011 Ginter” rather than “2011 Allen and Ginter”. A quick search shows that the majority of listings ending in 8 hours have at least one bid on them.

It appears the relic cards are particularly hot with multiple bids on most listings. Looks like this could again be the baseball card product of the year.
