2011 Bowman Platinum Review

Here’s what I found in the 2011 Bowman Platinum hobby box I recently busted, purchased from Dave and Adam’s Card World.

1 Auto / RelicJack McGee Green Refractor 071/199 jersey

2 AutosDelino DeShields and Bradon Guyer

Parallels

1 Red – Aroldis Chapman

1 Blue Refractor - Miguel De Los Santos – numbered 100 / 199

4 Gold – Matt Holiday, Daniel Descalso, David Ortiz, Jayson Werth

3 Green – Ubaldo Jiminez, Tim Lincecum, Nick Franklin (Refractor) numbered 384 / 599

Prospect X-Fractors – Marcell Ozuna, Cody Scarpetta, Carlos Perez, Mike Foltynewicz, Jurickson Profar

Bowman Prospect Base Cards – Drew Vettleson, Miguel De Los Santos, Corban Joseph, Julio Teheran, Domingo Santana, Allen Webster, Daniel Fields, Cutter Dykstra

I won’t list all of the base cards, but will say that I got both Jose Reyes and David Wright so I was personally happy about that.  I also got the Derek Jeter base card and will be sending that to one of my email subscribers.

Overall, I give this hobby box a triple.  The cards were almost all in mint condition out of the box, I’m a big fan of the design, there a plenty of propsects, and the on-card autos for the prospects are a real nice addition.  I would have given it a home run if the relic auto was on-card (it’s a sticker) and if the box price was just a bit cheaper.  Overall, though, a very good baseball card product by Topps.  I’ll be buying a box of Platinum again next year.

East Coast “National”

For you collectors who couldn’t make it out to the Windy City for the recent National, and who just might live closer to New York than Chicago, there’s another big show coming up real soon.  The East Coast “National” will be held in White Plains, NY, just under an hour north of the Big Apple.

The show will be held between August 18 and August 21 and will feature 450 dealer tables.  There will be 5 grading services present at the show, including:   JSA, SGC, PSA, BGS and ACE.

For each paid customer (admission is $8 for those 13 and older, 12 and under are free), you’ll get one free autograph on Saturday and Sunday.  The even cooler thing here is that every kid under 12 will get a free gift pack of cards.  Now that’s how it should be!  Baseball athletes who will be signing at the show include:  Ralph Kiner, Carl Erskine, Bobby Richardson, Lou Piniella, Ozzie Smith, Justin Turner, Ernie Banks, Dillon Gee, Dick Allen, Bucky Dent, Rusty Staub, and Bret Saberhagen.

See more about the autograph lineup and the East Coast National here.

Might just see you there!!

2011 Bowman Platinum – To be reviewed

2011 bowman platinum lincecumI justed wanted to let everyone know that I busted a hobby box of 2011 Bowman Platinum over the weekend, and I will be reviewing it in an upcoming post.

Just a sneak preview:  I was very satisfied with the cards, understanding that when you buy a single hobby box, it’s really hit or miss on getting hits of prospects or superstars.   But the quality was excellent and the card design is real nice.  More to come.

Oh yeah, by the way, I will be giving most of these cards away for free too.  Just sign up for my email feed (look for the box on the right sidebar of the blog here) and you’ll be sent a 2011 Bowman Platinum card.

Joe Mauer Cards to Collect Now

Joe Mauer’s baseball cards are not expensive.   At least not when compared to other superstars like A-Rod or Derek Jeter.  Yet, Mauer is one of the best catchers of all-time and an almost universally liked player.  (And he’s in somewhat of a slump as of this post – he’s only hitting .295 – which may be pushing down the price of his cards even further).  So which Joe Mauer cards should you collect right now?  Here are just a few.

1)  2002 Bowman Rookie Card

This is the Joe Mauer rookie card to collect.  Readily available, and affordable, even in a mint-graded condition.

2)  2011 Allen and Ginter Mini Cloth Card

This is a newer card, but one coveted by Mauer fans and Twins followers alike.  It’s serial numbered to 10 and is further unique in being both a mini and a cloth card.  Even being a Mets fan, I like this card a lot.

3)  2002 Topps Chrome Draft Picks

This card doesn’t have quite the appeal, in my opinion, that the Bowman card of the same year has, but it’s still a nice card, and a fairly affordable one, of a very youthful looking future Hall of Famer.

You can find more Joe Mauer cards to collect on eBay.

By the way, if you think you might be the winner of the 2011 Allen and Ginter relic card, please check your spam filter, and then add scott-at-cardcollectoruniverse-dot-com to your safe list.  Even if you didn’t win this card, there will be more chances to win more cards here down the road.   Thanks.

The Impact of MLB Trades on Card Value

So, the New York Mets are staying active during the MLB trading season.  K-Rod was dealt to the Brewers and now, Carlos Beltran has been dealt to the Giants.  The more recent trade netted the New York National League ball-club a top-notch pitching prospect.

Zack Wheeler, taken with the 6th overall pick in the 2009 MLB amateur draft, has most recently played at high-A San-Jose, winning 7 games with a 3.99 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 88 innings pitched.

His 2009 Bowman Draft Aflac auto card, numbered to 244 and ungraded, sold in mid-June of this year for $44. That same card, after the recent trade, sold for $85 on July 28. That’s almost a 100% jump in price.

Now, it’s possible that the condition of each card accounts for the difference in price. But, I looked at both scans and the cards appear to be in like condition. Is the variance in price a coincidence? Maybe. Is the variance in price due to the recent trade? Most likely.
