Proof to Protect Your Cards

So, I was off on vacation for two weeks and look what happened. An earthquake and a hurricane hit the East coast. I seriously hope none of you were hurt or adversely affected by either of these events.

I also hope none of your collections were damaged. This is more proof that you should be safely storing your most valuable baseball cards. Waterproof and fireproof storage should be considered by every serious collector.

If you have what you’d consider a valuable collection, you may also want to look into collectible insurance. It might cost you a few bucks, but probably much, much less than you’d spend to replace your card collection.

Just Google “collectible insurance” and you should find more info.

By the way, the free 2011 Allen and Ginter relic card I sent to the winner was returned with the package damaged, but the card intact. I will be safely resending that card to the winner in the near future. Also, remember to sign up for my email feed to get your own free baseball card.

Again, hope you got through the recent environmental events safely and happy collecting!

Baseball Trading Pins?

Baseball tradings pins are all the rage these days apparently.  Do you trade baseball pins?  If you’re not involved with Little League Baseball, you’re probably not trading baseball pins and most likely have no idea what I’m talking about.

Baseball trading pins usually have a team’s logo and team name and are probably swapped by players on different teams in large tournaments and events. When I was a kid playing youth travel soccer, we would trade patches with other teams. My brother, who was a better soccer player than I was, had a jacket full of patches from other teams that my Mom had sewn on for him. I guess this baseball pin trading thing is kinda like that.

Here is an example of a state level softball trading pin from the “Little League” store.

If you search for “Trading Pins” in the images section on Google, you will find many cool designs.  Here are just two of my favorite:

A quick search on ebay using the words “Little League Pins” will show you hundreds of trading pins available.

Happy collecting!!

2011 Allen and Ginter Hobby Box Review

Here’s what I found in the 2011 Allen and Ginter hobby box I recently purchased 2011 Allen and Ginter hobby boxfrom Dave and Adam’s Card World.

Mini Black Parallels (2) – Matt Hoffman, Wade Davis

Flora of the World (1) – Sweet Alyssum

Step Right Up (1) – Snake Charming

Portraits of Penultimacy (2) – The Hare, Sancho Panza

Uninvited Guests (2) – The Lizzie Borden House (2)

Animals (2) – Key Deer, Kakapo

World’s Most Mysterious Figures (2) – Fulcanelli, The Babushka Lady

Regular Minis (12):

Stan Lee, Dillon Gee (RC), Luke Hochevar, Drew Storen, Brett Myers, Pedro Ciriaco (RC), Bobby Abreu, Delmon Young, Dustin Pedroia, Aaron Hill, Chris Sale and Carl Pavano

Framed Autograph Redemption (1):  Shawn Michaels

Framed Relic (2): Adrian Beltre, Todd Helton

Ascent of Man (4)

Baseball Highlight Sketches (4)

Minds that Made the Future (3)

Floating Fortresses (3)

So, I opened this box right around when I opened the box of 2011 Bowman Platinum. My initial reactions were that the Bowman product was better. I guess I’m not into all the non-baseball stuff included in A&G. But the more I reviewed A&G, the more I liked it. Some of the non-baseball stuff is cool, especially the floating fortresses. I was kind of amazed that there is a card that you can actually plant and have flowers come up. Very cool.

Now, as far as the “hits” go. I like the game-used relics, in particular the Helton relic with a “pinstripe” (can you call it that when it’s not the Yankees?). I didn’t have any idea who Shawn Michaels was. Apparently, he’s somewhat of a big deal (Anchor Man quote kind of intentional there). My brother is into wrestling and immediately knew who he was. Fairly big hit for the auto I guess. It’ll be going up on eBay soon.

I’m kinda pressed for time, so I won’t be scanning in these cards just yet. When I get back from vacation in September I’ll put them up on the blog. But I did start sending out some of these cards to my email feed subscribers and will continue to do so when I return.

Once again, thanks for reading Card Collector Universe!

- Scott

Baseball Card Trading Sites – The “A” List

Baseball card trading sites can be found aplenty on the internet.  Here are just a few of my favorite, and the ones that seem to be both popular and reliable.

1) Sports Card Forum – this is not only a great place to trade cards, but there is also a really well run and active forum.  There is a tutorial on the site which will guide you through the trading process, and if you still need help, the forum members are sure to lend a helping hand.

2) Beckett – All you need to know here is that you have the sports card brand name behind this online trading site.

3) Blowout Cards Forums – Many people go to Blowout Cards because their prices are tough to beat for hobby boxes. Well, their forums are pretty tough to beat too. They are super popular and they offer a trading feature similar to Sports Card Forum.

4) Net 54 – If you’re into vintage baseball cards, this site needs to be bookmarked in your browser. This is the forum for talking about vintage cards, buying and selling vintage cards and of course – trading vintage baseball cards.

5) eTopps – The great thing about this site is that they hold the cards in inventory for you (so it’s kinda like trading stock). You can call for the card to be delivered to you, but you don’t have to. You also have the name of the biggest and baddest card manufacturer behind this site. The drawback here is that all cards are eTopps cards, so you cannot trade the majority of cards that might be in your regular card collection.  Still, there are many cool features with this site (such as their market stats).

Any baseball card trading site I missed here?  Any you think should be added to the list?
