The best baseball card of a second baseman was a real difficult pick. There were two players and two cards in real close contention here. Although Jackie Robinson was a trailblazer and one of the most exciting players to ever take to a field, Rogers Hornsby has the best career hitting stats for an MLB second baseman (see his stats here).
In the end the choice was Rogers Hornsby, and his 1921 American Caramel card. Okay, so why this card? Well, it’s one of the earliest baseball cards with an actual picture of Hornsby. (A few earlier ones were sketch cards, and “cartoon” drawings). It’s a real clear look at the best hitting second baseman to ever take to an MLB diamond. This baseball card was put out by American Caramel in 1921, and is sometimes called the 1921 American Caramel Series of 80. Interesting designation, because the set actually has 135 cards.
In any case, these baseball cards include black and white photos of some of the best baseball players of the era. Rogers Hornsby, as a future Hall of Famer, was certainly one of the best baseball players in 1921 when this set was put out.
