Teddy Ballgame, aka Ted Williams, was the easy pick here for the best baseball card of a left fielder. Little factoid though: Did you know that Carl Yaztremski (also a left fielder for the Red Sox) had a higher Hall of Fame vote-in percentage than Ted Williams? Yaz was great, but come on, Williams is recognized as the best pure hitter the game has ever seen.
And that’s one of the reasons why his 1939 Play Ball baseball card is the best baseball card of a left fielder. Check out the picture of the card below.
Look at the follow through on that swing. Even as a raw 20 year old rookie. (Who by the way, batted .327 and smacked 31 homers in his rookie year of 1939). What I like about this card too, other than it being black and white, is that you can see Ted’s classic jersey number 9 in the photo. One of the most recognizable jersey numbers in sports. When you see or think of jersey number 9, you think of Ted Williams or Gordie Howe.
The fact that this is a baseball card from the 1930s, of an iconic baseball player who many remember playing into the 1950s is a factor in this card being the best as well.
Depending on the condition of this 1939 Play Ball card, it can be valued from several hundred dollars to several thousand dollars.
