So, have you read the new Beckett Sports Card Monthly? What do you think? I’m actually kind of impressed. There is a lot more to it than I thought. The article on redemption cards was particularly interesting. It was never apparent to me why redemption cards were inserted into so many baseball card releases. Not only are the redemption cards frustrating for us card collectors, but they’re also frustrating for the baseball card companies.
Baseball cards are my primary collecting interest. I have collected cards from the other three major sports, but nowhere near as much as I’ve collected baseball cards. But……it was extremely interesting to read about card releases and news from the other sports card categories. This magazine may just re-spark my interest in hockey cards in particular. Why hockey cards? Not sure. Maybe because of Ovechkin and Sid the Kid.
Some might compare the new Beckett Sports Card Monthly to Tuff Stuff. Not an entirely unfair comparison. But I think the new Beckett release has a bit more to offer than Tuff Stuff. It goes a little more in-depth into the card news.
If there is one place that the Sports Card Monthly is lacking, it’s in the price guide. You’ll find only the most recent releases priced in the new Sports Card Monthly. You can get the detailed prices in Beckett’s other products, but it would be real nice to have the detailed price guides along with all the other cool card collecting news.

Personally, I still think it’s crappy that they combined them–and that if they feel they need to do that, that it’s just print, and not integrated better with the Web site (speaking of which, when is this new site supposed to launch?)
I subscribed to the football publication, because I wanted football information–the pricing I get online, but I like the detailed football information year round. Now I have to weed through a bunch of stuff that I don’t care about (hockey & basketball), and some stuff that I occasionally care about (baseball) to find scaled back information on what I wanted in the first place.
Not to mention that it still feels content light to me, and I find it disgusting that I’m paying for some content that I’ve already seen in some of the FREE newsletters I get emailed to me.
But, then again, I guess me being a bit anti-Beckett isn’t going to surprise anyone…
I agree about having more card prices, but they can only have so much in an issue before it becomes unwieldy. If you want the articles about the hobby, you’ll have to sacrifice. The mags can’t be how they were 15 years ago because there is too much product out in the last few years. Most people just but to sell.
If you only have interest in one category of sport cards, then this magazine will probably not impress you. If you are into at least two different sport card categories, then the depth of news and information just might keep your interest here. And if you collect all four major sports, then you gotta have this magazine. But we need more prices!
I enjoy the depth of the new articles, but I feel like I’m getting only a fraction of a magazine. I’m only interested in baseball. It’s nice to see other sports in the magazine, but it’s not what I signed up for.
