The much anticipated release of the 2008 Topps Heritage baseball card set is currently slated for February 27, 2008. This year’s set will feature today’s players on the 1959 Topps design. In hobby boxes, you’ll find 24 packs, with eight cards per pack.Â
There will be 425 cards in the base set, with 75 short printed cards, inserted one per three packs. There will be two chrome parallel cards per box. Each of 300 cards will have three different chrome parallels (chrome numbered to 1959, refractor numbered to 559, and black-border numbered to 59).Â
This year you’ll find the Real One autograph cards, highlighting both current stars and players who made their final appearance on a 1959 Topps card. You’ll also find Dual Real One auto’s hand numbered to 59 and signed in red ink.Â
In the hobby boxes exclusively, you’ll find box loaders which will be either a 1959 original Topps card (a buy-back) inserted one per two boxes, or a three-card strip advertising panel.
Most hobby shops will be shipping the 2008 Topps Heritage issue as a pre-sale on February 25.  You can see images of the set in the sell sheet.Â
You can see pictures of the original 1959 Topps baseball card set here.  Who are the stars and rookies you’d be looking for in the original set? Well, for one, Mickey Mantle of course. His 1959 Topps card (#10) in near mint to mint condition has a book value of around $1,000 right now. You will also find Willie Mays (#50), Stan Musial (#150), and Sandy Koufax (#163), just to name a few. As far as rookies go, there is one guy you really need to know: Bob Gibson (#514). His card in near mint to mint condition has a book value of about $300.Â
So how much of your hard earned cash can you expect to shell out for a hobby box? It seems that right now, somewhere about $65 is the fair market value, without shipping.Â
The 1959 Topps original set seems to be fairly popular with collectors. Look for the 2008 Topps Heritage baseball set to be popular as well.Â

I have heard several collectors are anxious to get their hands on this set. I thumbed through some original 1959’s this past weekend just for grins. I bought only one hobby box of last years Heritage and I plan on doing the same this year.

This does look like a nice set Joey. I may be picking up a box or three :-). The original 1959 set is pretty sweet. I was checking out some of the listings on eBay, and you can still pick some of these cards up for a decent price.
