Did you know that there was a baseball card of Babe Ruth on the Baltimore Orioles International League team from 1914? There is. And it’s very valuable.  The Baltimore Sun produced cards of the 1914 Baltimore Orioles for whom Babe Ruth played, prior to joining the Boston Red Sox in the Major League.  The Orioloes home and “abroad” schedules are posted on the back of each of these cards.
This card was recently discovered in a shoe box in the home of a former sports editor in Rhode Island. It was subsequently sold at auction. It’s a true gem of a discovery, and some say that only 10 of these cards are known to be in existence. This card, some say, may surpass the famed Honus Wagner card, as the most valuable card in existence.  And most people don’t even know about it, due to its scarcity.Â
This particular card was graded by PSA. It was graded a PSA 2. Is it in the best condition? No. Does that affect its value to a major extent. Not really in this case. Due to the cards scarcity, and the coniditon of the other known cards, the fact that this card is a PSA 2 does not diminish the cards’ value to a great extent.Â
It’s great, for us as collectors, to hear of such a card today. Especially on a day when the Mitchell steroid report is released. Babe Ruth is the true king of baseball, and probably always will be. His steroids were beer and hot dogs.Â
